Belgians Take Coke Bottles to Netherlands
Thrifty Belgians are causing a headache for Dutch supermarkets by gathering large numbers of plastic Coca Cola bottles and bringing them across the border to the Netherlands to collect the deposit, Dutch media reported Tuesday. The scheme takes advantage of a recent move by Coke's Dutch arm to introduce new bottles that are identical to the ones used in Belgium - but the Dutch bottles carry a euro 0.25 deposit. READ ON

"Belgium's Biggest swindlers ever" sentenced
Former husband and wife Laurent Demey and Daisy Ragole have been sentenced to five years' imprisonment by the criminal court in Ghent. Both set up a large-scale scam at the Crédit Lyonnais bank, involving a record sum of 87 million euros. "An unbridled craving for fast and easy money-making to keep up appearances in the world of business". That's how the judge in Ghent (East Flanders) described their main motivation. The scam involves more money than Britain's recent biggest cash robbery. READ ON

Thalys train hits 331 kmh!
A Thalys high-speed train has reached a record speed of 331.1kmh during a test run between Rotterdam and the Belgian border. The test run was held on the new high-speed line HSL-South. The test runs started two weeks ago and are designed to test the railway and the new European safety system ERTMS.
