Steer clear of Schaarbeek and St. Joost

Suggestion that you steer clear of the Brussels neighbourhoods of St Joost or Schaarbeek Saturday morning? Shopkeepers and cafe owners are planning a major demonstration for the morning. Not only is the Turkish community planning to put upwards of 10,000 people on the streets, but so is the local Kurdish community. Both of these planned demonstrations have been banned by the police, but in the light of the rioting here over the last week, I wouldn't put much confidence in the manifestation not going ahead. Muslims Intimidate Brussels Mayor

The Brussels mayor, Socialist Freddy Thielemans sent out a press release in which he has banned a demonstration for a minute of silence to commemorate the victims of 9/11 on the 11th sept in Brussels. The reason for the prohibition is that he says he cannot guarantee public safety and that he won’t disturb the Islamic section of the population in Brussels.
The group, “Stop the Islamization of Europe” points out by invoking the lack of public safety highlights the graveness of the situation.

Wow! Protests are now dangerous even before they start. The European self-parody continues, so much for freedom of speech.
