Iraqi detainees taunt Wisconsin Soldiers about Favre

About the only thing worse you could say to a Packers fan is......Your cow doesn't produce enough milk to make cheese.

If you happen to be a Packers fan who is sick and tired of hearing about Brett Favre, and you're thinking of joining the National Guard and going overseas to get away from it all.... stop. It's not going to work. The detainees in Baghdad are going to be just as vicious as the Vikings fans you know.

Iraqi detainees are attempting to hit Wisconsin soldiers where it hurts—with Brett Favre jokes. After troops revealed themselves to be Packers fans by decorating their Wisconsin National Guard camp in Baghdad with the team’s colors, the detainees there apparently realized that Favre’s move from the Packers to the Vikings was a sore point, and “things just started going downhill from there,”

First Lieutenant Tim Boehnen says. "One of the big words they know now is 'shenanigan.' They'll constantly talk about 'Favre shenanigans,'” said Boehnen. “'He's so good for the Vikings,' and 'The Packers have got to really feel bad about that one.’”

The detainees themselves are more focused on soccer, but appear to be quick studies of America’s signature sport. “They’ll hear guards talking about it, and then they pick up a lot of stuff from that,” said Boehnen. “They’re very crafty.”

Detainees are reportedly also bringing up Ryan Grant's diminishing YPC average, showing soldiers the Aaron Rodgers Sack Tracker, and teasing them about drafting Greg Jennings when Brandon Marshall was still on the board.

Belgian 'al Qaeda cell' linked to 2006 airline plot

A CNN documentary, One Woman's War, broadcast on Tuesday evening claims that the alleged cell had high-level links to al-Qaeda. The shocking story of Malika el Aroud, a Belgian-Moroccan woman convicted of running a Web site promoting terrorism.

An alleged terrorist cell arrested as Gordon Brown prepared to meet European leaders in Brussels is said to have connections to the highest levels of al-Qaeda, it can be revealed. The cell was suspected of being directed by a senior al-Qaeda planner.

According to Belgian counter-terrorism sources, the group was radicalised by a woman whose former husband has links to Abu Qatada, the radical preacher in jail in Britain. Belgian police rounded up the alleged cell as European leaders gathered in the Belgian capital for a two-day summit in December to discuss the economic crisis and climate change.

Johan Delmulle, the Federal Prosecutor, claimed one suspect had "received the green light to carry out an operation from which he was not expected to come back" and added: "This information, linked to the fact that a European summit is getting underway at this moment in Brussels, left us no choice but to take action."

The group of five men and a woman was only charged with membership of a terrorist organisation because investigators were unable to positively identify their target.

NATO to Launch TV Channel

NATO plans to start an online TV channel to improve the image of the Western military alliance.
NATO TV will be launched at a summit next week in Bucharest, Romania, alliance spokesman James Appathurai said Wednesday.
Much of its coverage will focus on the mission of the alliance's 47,000 troops in Afghanistan. NATO plans to have five TV crews sending regular reports from the country.
The channel will be available on the alliance's Web site, http://www.nato.int/. Broadcast quality footage will also be available for TV networks to download.
Denmark is providing much of the funding for the project, which is part of an effort to boost flagging public support in several allied countries for the Afghanistan mission.

Dubbed "Radio Brussels", (aka Radio Bulls**t) the station will be financed by the European taxpayer and will broadcast to up to 20 million listeners next year. I imagine actual listening figures will be countable on one hand! Wanna bet on who's going to be doing the math on the listenership numbers?

The European commission wants the taxpayer to fund what Lord Haw Haw was hanged for. Now the EU will have its own Minister of Information, any bells ringing here?

Rolling Stone on "The Great Iraq Swindle"

Rolling Stone has a long article about the vast sums of taxpayer money pouring into the coffers of sleazy US contractors in Iraq -- and how that money isn't being used to make things better for anyone but the ultra-rich in the US.

Because contractors were paid on cost-plus arrangements, they had a powerful incentive to spend to the hilt. The undisputed master of milking the system is KBR, the former Halliburton subsidiary so ubiquitous in Iraq that soldiers even encounter its customer-survey sheets in outhouses.

When things went wrong, KBR simply scrapped expensive gear: The company dumped 50,000 pounds of nails in the desert because they were too short, and left the Army no choice but to set fire to a supply truck that had a flat tire. "They did not have the proper wrench to change the tire," an Iraq vet named Richard Murphy told investigators, "so the decision was made to torch the truck."

A Day of Remembrance

Mary McHugh visited the grave of her fiancé, Sgt. James J. Regan, who was killed in Iraq in February. He is buried in the new Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery for those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He was a graduate of Chaminade High School in Mineola, New York and attended Duke University, where he played for the lacrosse team.
Regan was engaged and intended to go to graduate school. Friends and family said he could have had a career on Wall Street but decided to serve his country instead.
