The girls do a good job, but Ukrainian airline Wind Rose has stolen their idea, and made their own calendar with much hotter chicks......pictured here.

About 800 of the 4,000 employees "volunteered" to put forth their sexiest poses to be among "the girls of Ryanair." All sales benefit a children's nonprofit, so if your wife gets angry, say it's for charity.

Marooned in a sea of slagheaps, derelict factories and litter-strewn wasteland, the Belgian city of Charleroi is one of Europe's most unlikely tourist destinations.
The grim former coal-mining community is best known in Belgium for having the highest suicide and unemployment rates in the country.

The southern blackspot is even warning it will become more run-down in the current global financial crisis – having never really recovered from the previous two recessions.

But now, following a poll voting it the world's ugliest city, it is suddenly teeming with visitors willing to pay to see for themselves how relentlessly bleak Charleroi really is. Several businesses have sprung up since the survey, carried out in neighbouring Holland, offering "urban safaris" around some of the city's drabbest "attractions".

Tourists on the guided tours can climb a slagheap, inspect acres of post-industrial wasteland and visit the now demolished home of notorious child killer Marc Dutroux.
They can also see the apartment block of one of Charleroi's other notorious former residents – the world's first white female suicide bomber Muriel Degauque, who blew herself up in Baghdad in 2005, after marrying an Islamic radical.

One tour operator, Nicolas Buissart bragged that trips around the town – whose airport is a hub for low-cost airline Ryanair – were fully booked for the next two months. He said: "Visitors are genuinely appalled at the true hideousness of our town. Even as they fly in, they are shocked at the landscape of filth, slagheaps and wasteland.

"It looks like the very worst of the Russian communist era. It is a truly grim spectacle to behold."We take people around in a fairly decrepit old coach, visiting all the ugliest places – but the choice is actually endless because so little of the town has anything to offer. "Hopefully it makes visitors leaving feeling lucky about where they live themselves."Even locals complain socialist-run Charleroi, with a population of 200,000, is "a complete dump".

Shopkeeper Stephan Reignier said: "It is a monstrosity. The whole place should be bulldozed and rebuilt from scratch." In an attempt at positive spin smacking of desperation, the regional tourism website could only say of the city: "Charleroi has fun and does not take itself seriously."

Since Mr Buissart began tours of his home town, other rival firms have now set up and tourism had tripled in the past three months, Charleroi's town hall said.
A spokesman added: "It is not really anything to boast about, but in the short term a huge boost in tourist revenue could help fund some very badly needed regeneration of our town."

Ryanair is the Irish airline that brings new meaning to the term 'discount travel', and the Ryanair Girls Calender. The low fares you get with these guys would even give JetBlue blue balls (whatever that means?). But even these notorious price slasher are experiencing the decline in consumer air travel and the rise in fuel costs.

Despite announcing a potential 60 million euro ($94.41 million) loss this week, the company refuses to institute oil surcharges or cutback on any flight routes. Shares of Ryanair stock also dropped 22% upon the announcement.
Laughing in the face of all the Ryanair positive spin, one analyst has told the company to basically 'get real.' According to a BBC News report:

Eastern European Gangs Fly to Belgium to Rob Shops

In a secret report by the National Detective Information Service (DNRI) of the Dutch police, it is noted that Polish gangs are regularly flown into Charleroi Airport in Belgium.

There they are given instructions, by SMS, navigation apparatus and even signs on shops, on where they should carry out robberies in the Netherlands. The annual theft amounts to about 220 million Euro. One center of these gangs is the Polish town of Wroclaw; others come from elsewhere in Poland and Lithuania. The gangs often consist of 10 or more people.

Price war to bring cheaper transatlantic flights

A transatlantic price war is set to erupt as the first continental carrier moves in to take on British and American airlines flying from London to the US.

All are taking advantage of the deal which allows any European and US airline to fly between anywhere in the EU and the US.

Meanwhile, Michael O'Leary, the chief executive of Ryanair, is waiting in the wings. He is drawing up plans to set up his own low-cost transatlantic airline, flying to "secondary" airports in the USA from bases such as Stansted and Liverpool John Lennon. STORY

Belgium's Charleroi airport opens new terminal

Belgium's second-largest airport, Charleroi, inaugurated a new terminal Saturday, which officials hope will eventually double the number of largely budget passengers flying through.
Located in the largest city in Belgium's French-speaking Wallonia region about 45 kilometres (28 miles) south of Brussels, the newly modernised airport is expected to be partially privatised, Wallonia's transport minister said.

Built to receive up to five million, mostly foreign passengers yearly -- compared to the 2.5 million who currently use the airport -- the new 125 million-euro (185-million dollar) wing will be open to the public January 29.
Irish budget airline Ryanair made Charleroi its main base in continental Europe in 2001 and is by far the airport's leading client, transporting 85 percent of its passengers -- mostly from the Netherlands and northern France.

The Ryanair Calendar is now on sale onboard all Ryanair flights starting Saturday November 17th, with all proceeds benefiting charity Angels Quest, which provides respite care for children with special needs.

I have some special needs of my own, my wife calls it charity work too.

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has revealed his latest wheeze to squeeze a bit more cash out of his customers, though this time the proceeds will go to charity, rather than straight to his bottom line.

My immediate reaction was to wonder whether O’Leary was trying to encourage his cabin crew to wear clothes less regularly, in order to save ‘wear and tear’ costs. But apparently the plan is to raise money for children’s charity Angels Quest. So although it may sound like the kind of exploitative misogynist stunt that would antagonise feminists everywhere..... never mind, I'm sure it will anyway.

Unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to peruse the calendar, so I'm unable to judge whether it provides good value for money. But judging by Ryanair’s typical mark-up on a Kit-Kat, I'm guessing that it might be cheaper to head down to your local library and pick up a Maxim instead…"We are seriously considering making that the new inflight uniform," leers the Ryanair boss, who's planning to sell 15,000 copies at €5 a pop for a children's charity. O'Leary hints the airline's forthcoming charitable work may also include "a sneak preview of the Aer Lingus 2009 calendar with some granny in a swimsuit".

Okay, so the idea isn't uber-original. Back in 2006 there were some United flight attendants who posed for a sexy calendar in order to compensate their loss of pension. And a couple of years earlier even Delta stewardess Ellen Simonetti AKA QueenOfSky was fired for a *cough* racy shoot inside a Delta plane.
A Dutch newspaper says Ryanair cabin staff have posed in the nude for a 2008 calendar. It is only available for sale at the moment on flights. O'Leary never misses a chance to make another buck......although he claims proceeds will be for some kids fund

Ryanair to suspend flights

Irish low-coster Ryanair has suspended the sale of tickets on flights to and from Brussels Charleroi from November, calling for a guarantee that there will be no more wildcat strikes.
In June security staff at the Belgian airport carried out a strike, forcing the airline to cancel a slew of flights. Although the airport has promised that the dispute will be resolved, Ryanair has suspended bookings to and from Charleroi from November 12 as a contingency measure.
"Ryanair is determined to ensure that its flights and passengers at Charleroi will not be cancelled again and so there must be an effective contingency plan in place to keep this international airport open and operational even if some staff wish to engage in wildcat strikes in the future," a spokesman for the carrier said.
However, Ryanair did stress that flights to and from the Belgian hub in August, September and October would go ahead.
Meanwhile, a Ryanair advertising campaign claiming that its flights from London to Brussels are faster and cheaper than Eurostar trains has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
The regulator said the ads were misleading because they failed to take into account the time and money needed to travel from city centres to the airports that Ryanair flies from (London Stansted and Brussels Charleroi).
Responding, Ryanair called on the ASA to reverse the "false finding", maintaining that its flights are faster and cheaper than Eurostar. The airline sent the group a Dummies Guide to Mathematics, saying it apparently couldn't add or subtract.

Belgians left stranded

Several dozen Belgians were forced to spend Friday night at Pisa Airport after the plane that was due to take them to back Charleroi in Hainaut province was grounded by bad weather. To save ten eurocents per passenger Ryanair has initiated their new "run naked through security" procedures, as seen above.
The passengers will now have to wait until Monday evening for the next scheduled flight back to Belgium from the airport or buy a ticket with another airline to try, if they want to return to Belgium before.
The stranded passengers are unhappy at having to pay for three nights extra accommodation.
However, Ryanair is unrepentant. The company's spokesman in Belgium David Gering told VRT radio that "you should compare our flights with bus services".
"If your bus doesn’t turn up you don't expect the bus company to pay for an expensive hotel room while you wait for the next one".
