Cash for Clunkers.....The European way!

Amsterdam police are deeply concerned about a new craze in which vandals toss parked Smart cars into the city’s canals.

The so-called ‘Smart tossing’ takes place mainly during the weekend, when many youths are out for a night on the town.

Dutch media indicate that environmentally-friendly "smart" cars, tiny two-seaters, are being picked up by roving bands of "pranksters" and tossed into the city's canals.

According to the Dutch-language Telegraff, five of the smart cars have been thrown in the water in the past two weeks. Authorities fear the practice will spread to other locations.

Interestingly, the car-chuckers are called pranksters whereas if they set the cars on fire, they would be called unemployed, disenfranchised minority youths protesting their poverty-stricken lives.

A Pit Stop for your Car

The Dutch have engineered the first automated gas refueling stop called a TankPitstop. You pull the car up to the pump, wait, the robot arms appear, opens the gas tank on your car and pumps gas. Though it does not describe how the driver tells the robot how much to pump, and how to pay, it looks like technology has gone up another notch.

I haven't figured out how its going to get my locking gas cap off, but it should prevent women from driving away with the hoses still in their tank.

English is second language in Brussels

English has become the second most commonly spoken language in Brussels, according to a study by Philippe Van Parijs, professor at the UCL, La Libre Belgique reported today.
The study shows the rapid spread of English in Brussels. When today's teenagers have finished their language studies, it is probable that the ranking of Dutch, French and English in Belgium will be shuffled.
"English will be the most commonly spoken language in the country, followed by Dutch, and then by French." English is already the second language in Wallonia and Brussels. The second language in Flanders continues to be French.

Bakkersmolen

Just south of the Belgian/Netherlands border is a great place called the "Bakkersmolen", or ..."the baker's [wind]mill."
It has a working windmill, which the owner built. A steam locomotive giving rides to children A steam-powered carousel, bakery, using grain milled in the windmill, and many other interesting things.
We have friends in Belgium who took us there. We saw no other 'foreign' visitors, and our friends told us that indeed it's really only Belgians or Dutch that even know about it. In fact, the only pages I have seen about it are written in Dutch.
There is no charge for admission, but they would like visitors if possible to patronize the bakery, which is nooooo problem! They also serve food and beverages for reasonable prices...like De Konnick beer. We were there during beautiful weather, and sat outside on the patio.

Coffee shops to fingerprint smokers

Coffee shops licensed to sell marijuana in the southern Dutch city of Maastricht will begin fingerprinting customers and scanning their IDs this summer, a spokesman for the shops said Wednesday. The measures are aimed at ensuring the rules of the Netherlands famed tolerance policy are not violated, which could lead to shops being closed, said Marc Josemans, chairman of the Union of Maastricht's Coffee Shops.

"Dilbeek police don't speak French"

More hilarity from our local language police. The local police in Dilbeek were called this weekend by a woman who reported that her mother had been struck several times during a domestic dispute.
When the officers arrived on the scene and ascertained that no one at the address spoke Dutch they left and told the victim to call another local police department.
No action was taken or report filed against the perpetrator who was on the scene as well.
